ANIMAL FARM – GEORGE ORWELL - Secker & Warburg, May 1945. First edition of Orwell's classic political fable. One of 4500 copies printed. Animal Farm, A Fable by George Orwell Condition: the first few pages have a spot mark to the top corner, otherwise the contents are clean and in good condition throughout. The front hinge is slightly pulled. The spine is faded and the corners bumped. The covers are slightly soiled and have some marks. This is an ex Boots library copy. There is a label lightly edge pasted to the inside of the rear cover. The label to the front cover has been removed, but traces of adhesive remain. Size:19cm by 13cm. Has always been difficult to find Small 8vo, original green cloth, 92 pages. Chapter 1 begins on Page 9. Prior to this page there is a flyleaf, the first title page with "ANIMAL FARM" printed on one side, and nothing on the reverse, the full title page, author's name, publisher etc, and the publication date etc on the reverse, and then the story begins on Page 9 with Chapter 1. Whilst I can see no evidence of any pages having been removed (although as mentioned in the listing the hinges are slightly pulled) I am puzzled by the page numbering. The book was produced to war time standards and is printed on fairly poor stock ( which even so has stood the test of time much better than many more modern offerings) The book is, of course, recognised as one of the milestones of English 20th century literature. A corruscating indictment of Stalins Russia in the guise of a "fairy story". Orwell remained a champion of the left, but his own experiences and lack of sentimentality soured him to the revolutionary experiments. And once he brings his formidable intellect use of the language to bear, it is hard to resist his arguments. The authors masterpiece and one of the most skilful allegorical novels of the twentieth century, which the author said "was the first book in which I tried, with full consciousness of what I was doing, to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole." An old book, which was part of “THE MODERN LIBRARY of the World’s Best Books.” Published by Boni and Liveright, Inc., in New York. There is no copyright or publication date in the book. The only date found is in a footnote to Chekhov’s self-biography, which was translated in 1916. There are 14 of Chekhov’s short stories in the 252 pages. The book cover measures about 4-3/8 by 6-5/8 inches, and is about ¾ inch thick. The pages are in fairly good shape, but the cover shows wear. The pages are separated from the cover at the rear of the book and are a bit loose at the front. An earlier owner has put his bookplate and signature inside the front cover. Pages and cover are tight, with cover showing some wear around the edges and at ends of spine. The inside cover has a small sticker from The News Exchange in Canton, Ohio, and a previous owner signed her name in blue pencil on the fly leaf.
